Clean Your Sex Toys

How to Clean Your Sex Toys

Think of cleaning your toys, the same way you think of peeing after sex. Your sex toys deserve the same attention. Toys that are stored away with bodily fluids can naturally lead to the spread of bacteria.

Besides reducing infections, cleaning your toys also helps keep your toys in the best shape. Not cleaning your toys properly can lead to the material and motor to degrade over time.

When should I clean my sex toys?

You should wash your toys before you store them way.

It is preferred to clean your toys after each use, but post-sex we know it is unlikely that you’ll clean your toys. So, before you store them away in a safe place, at a bare minimum rinse them off. You may want to rinse them before use as well, depending on how you store them.

How do I clean my sex toys?

Depends on the materials your toys are made of and whether they are waterproof.

Porous materials have microscopic pores that bacteria get into – which means these toys can never be fully cleaned and should not be shared between yourself and another. You can read more about materials here.

Porous toys should be washed with warm water and a mild soap and should be dried fully with a clean towel before storage.

Do I submerge, or not submerge in water?

Waterproof toys can be cleaned in a bowl of soapy water. If you are unsure whether your toy is waterproof, please check the toy’s packaging and/or manufacturers website. If in doubt, run only the parts of your toy that you need to clean under running water.

Can I boil my sex toys?

If your toy is made from pure silicone, metal or glass and is motorless, then you can sterilise your toy by placing it in a pot of boiling water for five to ten minutes. Don’t handle any freshly boiled toys with your hands – metal and glass retain the heat and could easily burn you.

What is the difference between cleaning and sterilizing my sex toys?

Cleaning your toys rids them of any residual liquids or substances on the surface of your toys. Sterlising gets rid of all bacteria on toys. It is best to sterlise when you plan to use your toy for vaginal use after anal use, or if you want to share you toy with a partner. Boil to sterilize, if possible.
